VMST hosted the USMS 2-mile Cable National Championship on July 10 at Chris Greene Lake, Charlottesville, VA. The official results have been added to the website, and the race was featured in an entry of competitor Rob Dumouchel’s blog, RobAquatics.
- There were 172 entrants, 105 of which were members of the Virginia LMSC; 156 of the entrants finished the race, which resulted in four new USMS records. Read the press release and check out the photos of the event taken by Katharyn Tupitza.
- The best race photo has to be the one of race director Dave Holland with national record-holder Richard Seldon (88) and national champion Calvin Barnes (86). Both Richard and Calvin are members of the Virginia LMSC and are the only two people on the planet in the 85-89 age group to have ever completed a two-mile cable swim. As they stepped forward to receive their medals they were met with thunderous applause.
- Nine national champions hailed from our LMSC: Abby Nunn (W18-24, in a new national record), Barbara Streater (W35-39), Shirley Loftus-Charley (W55-59), Marcia Barry (W60-64), Pam Dameron (W65-69), Adam Barley (M25-29), Robbie Allen (M40-44), Chris Stevenson (M45-49), and Calvin Barnes (M85-59). Congratulations to them and to all participants!
- Many kudos to race director Dave Holland and all the other volunteers for again putting on an incredibly well-organized event. Since 1977 there has been a long and rich history of masters swim races at CGL, which first hosted a national masters championship in 1980.
