“Masters swimming keeps you younger.” Most of us don’t need to be convinced, but it is nice to have expert confirmation. Dr. Joel Stager of the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming (Indiana University) has released some data from a study using masters swimmers: Biological Markers of Aging in Highly Active Adults.
- Of course, Dr. Stager is not the first person to find masters swimmers worthy of scrutiny. Check out this article by Richard Rahe, who was introduced to the subject by none other than USMS founder Capt Ransom Arthur himself.
- Dr. Rahe’s observance of a slow but fairly constant relative decline in speed with age is exactly consistent with the record curves used in our own Swim Rating calculator.
