How does exercise keep you young?

Dr. Gabe Mirkin, who publishes an online blog of exercise tips and nutritional advice, recently addressed the question of “How Exercise Keeps You Young (and Prolongs Your Life).”

The take-home messages are:

  • aging appears related to loss of function of the mitochondria in cells
  • to strengthen mitochondria most effectively, exercise frequently and with intensity

In the same post, he refers to criticism of the newly released US dietary guidelines.
