LMSC Treasurer and Officials chair Charlie Cockrell was awarded the USMS Dorothy Donnelly Award at the USMS Convention in Jacksonville, FL. Named in honor of Dot Donnelly, who gave tirelessly to the organization, this award recognizes those who lend generously of their time and expertise to USMS.
Charlie certainly fits the bill, and deserves many kudos for this honor. His nomination letter is shown below.
Nomination for the Dorothy Donnelly Service Award
Charlie Cockrell is a volunteer who demonstrates the same dedication to our sport that Dot Donnelly did. As well as being active on national committees (Officials and Rules) and serving in leadership positions on the national level (Officials Committee Chair), Charlie has been extremely valuable to the LMSC for Virginia.
Charlie has been meet director for both short course and long course meets. He served as the LMSC Officials Chair and fostered a very friendly and important working relationship with local USA Swimming officials. He still works with meet directors and referees to ensure consistency in officiating at local meets.
Charlie served as LMSC Chair and encouraged a variety of swimmers to become involved in the administrative side of Masters swimming. Bringing in new volunteers has helped our LMSC remain vital.
His job took him to Alabama for several years, but as soon as he returned, he took over as LMSC Treasurer just as our long time Treasurer was moving. He is efficient and friendly in working with our Registrar, clubs, and the national office.
One of his most unique contributions to the LMSC was helping the club swim team at Christopher Newport University form a Masters team.
I can’t think of anyone who merits the recognition of this award more than Charlie Cockrell.
