Although competitive events seem to get all the attention, the majority of USMS members will not participate in a pool meet or open water race this year. But there are still a number of non-competitive Fitness Events that can help motivate you. The two most prominent are the Check Off Challenge and the Go The Distance events. It isn’t too late to start either one!
Go The Distance (GTD) is particularly rewarding because you can set goals for yourself (and even change them if something unexpected happens, like an injury) and see if you are keeping pace with your goal. This is most conveniently done by tracking your yardage in the USMS Fitness Log (FLOG), which is easily accessed at your My USMS page. Illustrated instructions for setting up your FLOG and entering GTD are available here.
Members from our LMSC are participating in GTD at an unprecedented rate in 2012: as of July 24, 91 swimmers have logged over 10,700 miles! If we continue at this rate we should approach 19,000 miles for the year, far greater than the 14,000 miles we logged in 2011. Start FLOG-ing yourself today!
But the Check-Off Challenge and GTD aren’t the only possibilities out there: a recent thread in the USMS Discussion Forums listed a number of other Fitness Events and Challenges that you can watch for in the future, such as various versions of the Brute Squad postal event.
