Recently, Laura Jones posted a USMS feature article, “Everyone Swims in Michigan,” that claimed a 50% participation rate for swimmers in the Michigan LMSC. So how many members in our LMSC compete in a pool or open water event?
Examining the results from 13 events from the past year provided an answer: about 39% of LMSC members competed in an OW or pool event. Breaking these numbers down further, at least 15% of our members participated in an OW event while 27% competed in a pool-based meet (the numbers add up to more than 39% because some participated in both types of competition). The number who competed in meets is pretty comparable to the level of participation (29%) nation-wide in USMS santioned or recognized pool-based meets.
