Chris Greene Lake Swim

Summer Open Water Opportunities

The weather is warming up, and that means open water swimming! We have a full slate of nearby events for you to scratch that OW swimming itch. Go to our Upcoming Events page and type “OW” in the search box to see all the options.

  • May 28-29: first up is a doozy, the Jim McDonnell races and clinics in Lake Audubon (Reston, VA). But you better hurry: entries close on Friday the 13th! This is always a big but well run event.
  • July 9: Next we have the longest running cable swim event in the country: the John Shrum Memorial Cable Swims at Chris Green Lake. This is a great swim for all types of OW swimmers. New swimmers get a mild introduction to the sport — that cable can be a comfort! — while experienced hands get to assess their training on a measured and reproducible course. Enter either the 1-mi or 2-mi swim…or both!
  • July 25: The USA Masters Games in Greensboro, NC, sounds like a fun experience, with 24 different sports and a Games Village to provide an Olympics-like atmosphere. There is plenty of  swimming, of course: the event offers pool (July 21-24) and open water (July 25) races.
  • Aug 6: The Lake Moomaw 1-mile swim is back for its third year! Set in a gorgeous location, the swim is short enough that you have plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings with your family.
  • Aug 12-13: After all that OW swimming you are ready for the 1-mile and 5K USMS Open Water National Championship at Lake Lure, NC. Apparently North Carolina likes their sports festivals: those who are so inclined can enter running or cycling races, or even participate in a Golf Tournament.
