The 2016 LMSC Annual meeting will be held Nov 6 at 7pm at the home of Jim and Patty Miller. All LMSC members are invited and encouraged to attend; a conference call will be set up for those who cannot physically attend but would like to participate.
The address is 13441 Stonegate Road, Midlothian, VA, 23113. Dial-in information, reports, meeting agenda, and more information about the meeting will be posted on our administration page as it becomes available. The board of directors (BOD) may propose and vote on motions; as outlined in our bylaws, the BOD “shall consist of the officers, the chairs of the standing committees, club delegates, and special appointments.” LMSC chair Dave Holland has written a report about the current state of the LMSC.
If you cannot attend in person but would like to participate in the conference call, call 641-715-0634 and, when prompted, enter the access code of 644431.
This is an elections year; our four elected officers are Chair, Vice-chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. Below are short bios of the current candidates; additional candidates may be nominated at the meeting by any registered LMSC member, provided that such candidates give written consent.
Chair: Kirk Clear
Kirk Clear has been involved with Masters swimming since 1991, when he was stationed in California. He has also done some masters swimming in Mississippi, New Orleans, and in Iceland, where he also did some coaching. He lives in northern Virginia (Ashburn) and joined the Virginia Masters Swim Team in 2011, and enjoys participating in relays and the camaraderie of teammates. Although a member of VMST, Kirk does workout once a week with the Blue Wave Swim Team Masters, and he has been successful in recruiting other local swimmers to join USMS.
Kirk’s USMS swimming achievements include one individual and 2 relay national records, All-American status 9 times (1 ind., 8 relay), and 47 Top-10 swims. He has been involved on teams, or actively swimming in multiple Zones and LMSCs, to include the Southern Pacific LMSC, Colorado LMSC, Southern LMSC, and the Virginia LMSC. Kirk also has a long history of volunteerism, such as President of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Alumni Association; Board of Directors for the National Capital Region (NCR) Joint Military Hockey Team; Student Council President in college; and an annual Judge for the National History Day competition. Kirk lives with his wife, Sherri, in Ashburn, and they have 3 daughters—none of who swim.
Vice Chair: Denise Letendre (current office holder)
After a collegiate career at Rutgers University, Denise Letendre joined USMS in 2011. Upon moving to Richmond in 2013, she joined Virginia Masters Swim Team and has served as President of the club since 2014. She has also served as Vice Chair of the LMSC since 2014. Denise has competed at 3 USMS National Championships and also enjoys competing in open water races. When she’s not in the pool, Denise works as an Assistant County Attorney for Henrico County
Treasurer: Dr. Jan Chu
“I have had a physical disability for 10 years now that causes chronic hip pain and problems with my right leg. I started getting into the pool because doing aquatic physical therapy was a lot better for the medical condition than any exercises outside the water. After being at the pool for a few months, I decided I wanted to start doing laps again (I use to swim laps before this medical problem). After doing laps on my own for awhile, I joined the master’s program at my pool. I swim for Freedom Aquatic Club in Manassas, VA. I also coach for Freedom Aquatic Club on Sunday mornings.
“I am a veterinarian at Ohana Veterinary Care in Bristow, VA. I worked at this practice for 1 year. I care for dogs and cats only, and I have a special interest in dentistry. I graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. Prior to working at my present job, I worked for Merrifield Animal Hospital in Fairfax, VA for 15 years. The was the hospital director for about 7.5 years at this place. At the hospital, I also helped with the finances for about 3-4 years. Outside of work, I am on the board of Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. This past year I have served as president. I served one year as treasurer.”
Secretary: Alice Phillips (current office older)
“I was a summer league swimmer who enjoyed many other sports growing up. In my mid-20’s I decided to focus on swimming as my primary sport and was thrilled to find masters swimming. I have competed at least once year for the last 25 years including both LC and SC nationals (I like SC better!), local and regional meets, and most recently in open water competitions. This year I completed the John Shrum Two Mile Lake Swim in Charlottesville and the Peluso Open Water Bridge and Back 5 miler. I plan to do the Lido Key Swim Without Limits Race in April 2017 as I trained for it this year but was bummed when it had to be cancelled. I also coach masters for POWM as well as summer league here in RVA.
“I am an ASCA Level II certified masters coach and have served a variety of roles off and on over the years in the LMSC including some writing for the newsletter, Records Chair, Coaches Chair, and this past year Secretary.”
