Lake Moomaw 2018 Race Results

Results have been posted for the Lake Moomaw 1-mile race, “the best dam swim in Virginia,” which was held on Saturday, August 4.

The 6th annual one-mile swim at Lake Moomaw was a resounding success, with 56 brave souls toeing the start line at Coles Point. Despite a rainy week and some local flooding, the water conditions were calm, with the thermometer reading 77 in the water and 70 above, under mostly sunny skies.

Olivia Herb-Wade was the overall winner, out-sprinting defending champion Kate Stephensen in the final 10-yard run up the beach, and crossing the not-so-proverbial “line in the sand” in 21:05.81. Stephensen finished in 21:07.00, and Cara Machlin was third overall in 21:37.00.

On the men’s side, Kevin Franceschini was first in 22:06.20, with Jim McFarland finishing second in 22:42.42, and Christopher Hess rounding out the top 3 in 23:57.28.

Several participants were new to the event, including Mandy Leeth, who competed successfully in her first-ever open water swim, and Russ Abdrakhmanov, who traveled from Philadelphia.

The event was possible due to a partnership between Va Masters Swim Team, the Alleghany-Highlands Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Forest Service, and support from volunteers with Falling Spring and West Rock water rescue teams. Next year’s event is tentatively slated for Saturday, August 3, 2019. Updates and photos can be found at
