  • Some noteworthy upcoming competitions:
  • Seventeen swimmers from our LMSC journeyed to Puerto Rico for the USMS 2010 Summer Nationals, with excellent results!
    • These swimmers set 23 new LMSC records (21 individual, 2 relays). Terry Sue Gault led the way with a whopping 8 new records (7 individual, 1 relay), while Matt Haupt's impressive performance in the 200 fly broke a 15-year-old world record!
    • Ten swimmers are newly-crowned national champions in one or more events! Barbara Zaremski set the standard this time, with an astonishing 8 national titles (6 individual, 2 relay).
    • With only 16 swimmers attending, Virginia Masters placed 7th in combined scoring, with the VMST women placing 2nd.
    • Don't forget to check out the video gallery or the photo gallery of the meet.

  • The Colonies Zone LCM Championship was held in College Park, MD on Aug 21-22. There were 38 swimmers from our LMSC entered, representing 4 different clubs: QMST (1), SHYM (1), UNAT (2), VMST (30), WAVA (4). The unofficial results have been uploaded. Highlights include:
    • Three relays set new world records! The team of Johnnie Detrick, Laura Walker, Beth Schreiner and Betsy Durrant set records in both 400 and 800 free relays in the 280-319 age group. And Betsy and Laura were joined by Judy Martin and Shirley Loftus-Charley to set a new world standard in the 400 medley relay for the 240-279 age group. Impressive job, ladies!
    • There were plenty of other records, including 25 new LMSC records (19 individual, 6 relay). Shirley Loftus-Charley was a model of efficiency: while entered in only two events (1500 free and 400 medley relay), she managed to set 1 new world record and 5 new LMSC records! On the men's side, Calvin Barnes continues to impress with 5 new LMSC records under his belt (4 individual, 1 relay).
    • VMST dominated the team scoring, winning the men, women and combined team scores while scoring almost 3 times as many points as its nearest competitor. Congratulations to all who participated.

  • Every month, the USMS Fitness Committee publishes another Fitness Article of the Month.
    • The latest article in this excellent series is of special interest to masters coaches: "Training Fitness Swimmers," written by Fitness Chair Coordinator Ali Hall along with award-winning coach Kerry O'Brien from Walnut Creek Masters.

  • The information packet has been posted for the annual USMS Convention, taking place Sept 15-19 in Dallas, TX. This is a "rules" year, meaning that a major focus of the meeting will be on proposed changes to the rules of competition.
  • The final Top Ten listings for the 2010 Short-Course Yards season have been published, and as usual the swimmers in our LMSC performed very well. The SCY season runs from June 1 of the previous year through May 31 of the current year. Some highlights of the SCY10 season:
    • 110 individual swims were posted -- including six #1 swims -- were posted by 31 swimmers representing 4 different clubs (CFYM, QMST, URMS, VMST), while 27 relays from VMST were ranked in the top ten, including six top-ranked relays.
    • The Mythical National Championships page has been updated to include the SCY10 season. Our LMSC placed 14th (out of 49); VMST's point total was the 13th highest club score in the country, and the 4th-highest point total for local clubs. An impressive showing!
    • There were 83 new LMSC records set during the SCY10 season; 14 of the swims were also new Colonies Zone records and 7 of the swims were under the previously-published USMS national records!

  • Did you notice? In the August 2010 issue of StreamLines, the USMS electronic newsletter, the "Really Cool Website of the Month" was awarded to...none other than our very own Warrenton Masters Swim Team! Congratulations to Coach Charlie and the rest of the WAVA crew.

  • A handful of LMSC members travelled to Baltimore for the Maryland Association Swim Series Summer LCM Meet held on Aug 7 at UMBC.
    • Among them were two experienced hands, Johnnie Detrick and Richard Scott, who set five LMSC records between them.
    • The official meet results have been uploaded. Congratulations to everyone who competed!

  • The 2-mile OW cable national championship held at Chris Greene Lake was recently featured on the USMS web site.
