What's New in the LMSC: August 2012

USMS/ASCA Masters Coach Certification
- On Sept 12 there will be two clinics prior to the USMS Annual Convention in Greensboro, NC: one for levels 1 and 2 certification and one for the new level 3 certification. Registration accepted until Sept 11 or until the classes fill.
- If you can't make it to the mid-week clinics in Greensboro, watch for later opportunities Nov 3-4 in Nashville, TN.
Paddles or Propellers? How to Swim Perfectly
- A recent NY Times article, Delineating the Perfect Swim Stroke, addressed the physics of efficient swimming.
Chris Greene Lake Swim Results
- On July 14, 125 swimmers participated in the 36th Annual Chris Greene Lake open water cable swims, and the results have been uploaded to our website. Director Dave Holland has written a press release describing this year's race.
- We have photos, too!
Queen of the Lake
- For the second straight year, swimming phenom Shirley Loftus-Charley set two open water national records. This year's achievement caps 31 consecutive years (and counting!) of competing at Chris Greene Lake.
Fitness Challenges and Events
- Most USMS members will not participate in a pool meet or open water race this year, but there are still a number of non-competitive Fitness Events that can help motivate you. The two most prominent are the Check Off Challenge and the Go The Distance events.
LMSC Election Nominating Committee
- The Virginia LMSC will hold elections of officers at our annual fall meeting. We need a nominating committee of 3 LMSC members to suggest candidates. If you are interested in serving on the nominating committee, please notify Betsy Durrant.
Preliminary SCY Top Ten Lists
- The preliminary Top 10 listings for the 2012 short-course yards season, which ran 6/1/11 - 5/31/12, are now available. You can also view the LMSC-specific individual and relay listings.
Summer Nationals Results
- Results from the 2012 USMS Summer Nationals are now available. A small contingent of 10 LMSC swimmers swam at the pool in Omaha that had just been used for the US Olympic Trials.
Dealing with Fear of Open Water
- USA Swimming recently published an excellent article on their website outlining strategies to tame feelings of open water panic.
Commonwealth Games Results
- Results have been uploaded for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, a long course meet held June 30 in Christiansburg, VA. Nice photos, too!
