The entry deadline for the Chris Greene Lake cable swims is fast approaching! The deadline is July 6 for mail registration and July 9 for online registration. Both 1-mile and 2-mile races are being held this year. Don't delay: there is NO race-day registration.
The Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association's Ocean Swim Series will be held on two dates this year, with two races on each day: July 8 (1-mi and 3-km) and Aug 5 (1-mi and 5-km). Race-day registration is possible for both dates, but you can save some money by registering early by mail. The early registration deadline for the July 8 race has passed, but it is July 25 for the second races.

Recent Results

June 10: Great Chesapeake Bay Swim. Thirty members of our LMSC braved the waters near Annapolis; see how they did in one of the country's premier open water swims.
June 10-17: FINA World Championships. Five LMSC members traveled to Italy to compete in the FINA World Masters Championships. Around 10,000 athletes participated in pool or open water races, and the complete results are now available.
June 23: LMSC member Abby Nunn wins the world's longest aquatic race. Abby left her rivals in the dust, winning the 28.5-mile Manhattan Island Marathon by more than 17 minutes!
June 24: Jack King Ocean Swim. 131 swimmers completed the 29th Annual Jack King 1-Mile Ocean Swim; check out the results.

A handful of swimmers are representing our LMSC in some far-flung locations, at the14th FINA World Masters Championships (Riccione, Italy) and the USMS Summer National Championship (Omaha, NE, at the Olympic Trials pool).

An overlooked aspect of open water swimming is turns. "Turns," you say? "But there are no walls in the open water!" Well, keep reading!

Fitness Swimming Matters

Linda Shoenberger wrote a nice article, Why Fitness Swimming Matters, that underscores the importance of swimming as a healthy lifestyle.

Marie Goes Mainstream

Marie Kelleher's accomplishments have been recognized by the national mainstream press, appearing on the National Public Radio and Sports Illustrated websites.

Is He Drowning?

Mario Vittone has posted an excellent article, "Drowning doesn't look like drowning." Want to do more to encourage adults to learn to swim or include swimming as a healthy lifestyle choice? Consider giving your time or talents to the USMS Swimming Saves Lives foundation.

Did you catch it? VMST coach Dr. Jim Miller wrote a guest editorial for Swimming World, "Balancing High Volume: Building Blocks of Performance."
